03 FRI. Marrakech – Ksar of Ait Ben Haddu – Ouarzazate – Boumalne Dades. –
We set off to cross the Atlas Mountains, where towering, often snow-capped peaks greet us, bidding farewell to the Marrakech palm grove. Small Berber villages cling to the cliffs. We visit the fortified village of Ait Benhaddou, a location for numerous films. Both today and tomorrow, we will travel through the so-called biblical landscapes. Time in Ouarzazate, a city with an impressive Kasbah . We continue towards the Valley of Roses. Boumalne Dades. Dinner included.
Note: On very rare occasions (during winter) there may be snow problems in the Atlas passes; if the road is closed for this reason, an alternative program will be made (reaching or not reaching the Sahara depending on alternative mountain passes closed).
04 SAT. Boumalne Dades – Todra – Erfoud . –
An exciting stage in the Sahara Desert, the Valley of the Kasbahs , river valleys with thousands of palm trees, stony plains followed by oases, and adobe villages with imposing fortresses guarding the way. We visit the Todra Gorge, a breathtaking canyon with walls on both sides over 100 meters high. On our route, we stop in a small adobe village near Khorbat to explore a desert village where the Europamundo Foundation has collaborated (access is sometimes impossible due to weather conditions and river flooding). We continue towards Erfoud. Lunch is included. Passengers who wish can take a 4×4 excursion to the Sahara dunes and watch the sunset among the dunes.
05 DOM. Erfoud – Fez . –
We’ll depart early from Erfoud , crossing the Atlas Mountains once again through dramatic gorges and breathtaking landscapes. We’ll then traverse a high, cold plateau inhabited by nomadic herders. A brief stop will take us to Midelt, a market town in the heart of the region whose economy is primarily based on agriculture. We’ll continue our journey, stopping for lunch in the Middle Atlas Mountains, by a lake in a beautiful natural setting. Lunch is included. The landscape changes dramatically; we’re now in a region abundant with forests and frequent snowfall in winter. Near Azru, in the National Park, we’ll visit “The House of Cedars,” a small museum that provides information about the region. Here, we’ll see and be entertained by the colonies of monkeys that inhabit this area. We’ll continue to Bhalil, a small, peaceful town inhabited by Berbers of the Middle Atlas. Its picturesque old town features colorful streets. Traditionally, the population lived in caves, which have now been incorporated into the houses. Continue to Fez. Before going to the hotel, we will admire the view of the old city from the Marinid Tombs . Dinner and overnight stay.
06 MON. Fez – Volubilis – Moulay Idris – Meknes. –
Our tour includes a visit to Fez, entering through the Bronze Gates of the Royal Palace, exploring the Jewish Quarter, its lively souks, and the tanneries. The cultural capital of the country, home to the oldest university in the world, Fez was founded in the 9th century and is renowned for its impressive Medina, which has preserved its traditional Arab atmosphere like no other. At the end of the tour, we will enjoy lunch in a historic palace within the Medina.
After lunch, we travel to the archaeological site of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 3rd century BC, the city of Volubilis , capital of Mauretania Tingitana, was an important military outpost of the Roman Empire, where numerous beautiful monuments were erected. Entrance included. Nearby is Moulay Idriss, a holy city and pilgrimage site for Muslims in Morocco (closed to non-Muslims until 1912; until 2005, non-Muslims were not allowed to stay overnight). Moulay Idriss, great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and founder of the first royal dynasty of Morocco, is buried there.
Continue to MEKNES, dinner and accommodation.
07 MAR. Meknes – Rabat – Casablanca. –
Visit Meknes, another fascinating city declared a World Heritage Site. Founded for military purposes in the 11th century by the Almoravids, it was the capital of the kingdom during the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail (1672-1727), founder of the Alaouite dynasty. This sovereign built an impressive city in the Hispano-Moorish style, surrounding it with high walls punctuated by monumental gates. We will be amazed by the immense Bab el-Mansur gate and the activity in El Hedim Square (reminiscent of Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech). Entrance to the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is included.
After the visit, free time and continuation by highway, time for lunch at a service area. Arrival in Rabat and panoramic tour of the capital of the Kingdom. We will see the imposing Udayas Fortress , the Hassan Tower where the mausoleum of King Mohammed V is located, the Andalusian Walls, the outer grounds of the Royal Palace, and the modern embassy district. After our visit, a short free time and continuation of the route.
CASABLANCA – Arrival at the end of the day. Dinner included.
08 WED. Casablanca – Marrakesh. –
This morning we include a guided tour of Morocco’s largest city and economic center. We’ll explore its grand avenues, stroll through the beautiful Mohamed V Square with its fountain, Moorish buildings, and palm trees, and visit the Arab League Park. We’ll also visit the small Medina. The tour includes entrance to the enormous Hassan II Mosque (the only mosque in Morocco where non-Muslims are permitted entry), located by the sea, with its 210-meter-high minaret and laser lights at the top pointing towards Mecca. Afterward, you’ll have free time for lunch in the pleasant seaside area of the Corniche .
